Dr. Bruce L. Akey

Akey Laboratory Consulting LLC

            Having been engaged in veterinary diagnostic laboratory science for over 30 years, Dr. Akey has been a Director of veterinary diagnostic laboratories in three states (VA, NY, TX), overseeing and providing leadership for both daily operations as well as strategic directions.  These laboratory systems include two of the largest and busiest in the nation and represent three different administrative structures, state run, university run and university affiliated. He now provides private consulting services on a wide range of laboratory operational aspects including leadership and management training, strategic planning, workflow efficiencies, laboratory information systems and laboratory facility design and construction. He has led or participated in multiple laboratory operational reviews and planning efforts, including for the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Office of Laboratory Services, the Purdue University Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, the Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory, the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Service’s Bronson Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory and the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, in addition to the New York and Texas laboratories.  Such reviews and planning culminated in specific, practical, measurable recommendations and plans for implementation of improved workflows, better client service and a more sustainable laboratory business model.

            Dr. Akey earned a BSc (Biology) from the College of William and Mary in Virginia, an MSc (Parasitology) from the University of Florida and the DVM degree from the University of Minnesota.  He is a past President of the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) and the recipient of multiple awards and recognitions from the AAVLD, US Department of Agriculture and others.
