Killer T cell engaging lymphoma cell - hot sculpted glass

Auction Item: A1021 - Silent Auction - Priceless Item
Total Value: Priceless

Donation ID: Donated by: Description
Value
D30 North Dakota State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory Our immune systems have specialized cells called "killer T cells" which are able to recognize and destroy virus-infected and cancerous cells. Alex Ritter is an immunologist and glass worker who studies these specialized immune cells. In the lab, Alex's work focuses on using advanced light microscopes to capture dynamic videos of killer T cells engaging and destroying cancer. He uses these videos to learn the secrets of how many cancer cells evade detection and destruction by the immune system. In the studio, Alex models the 3-dimensional T cells and cancer cells he studies using hot sculpted glass. When T cells recognize cancer, they engage the cancer cell in a sort of "hug" before secreting toxic proteins which eliminate the threat. That first moment of cancer cell recognition is captured in this piece inspired by a killer T cell engaging a lymphoma cancer cell.

Alex was born and raised in Williston, North Dakota. He received his undergraduate degrees at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN before pursuing a PhD at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Find more of Alex’s work on Instagram @cells_invitro

Size: It is 3” wide by 4” tall

The photo shown is the inspiration for the piece.
